MEET THE PACIFIC BIOCONTROL TEAM
April 7, 1952 – September 21, 2020
Our wonderful colleague and friend Nick Macris passed away on Monday, September 21. Nick was born in the U.S., but he grew up on a farm near Culiacán, Mexico.
Nick graduated from the Army Navy Academy in Carlsbad, California and then went on to earn a Masters degree from the University of California in Riverside. Following graduation, Nick moved to the Fresno area where he began his career in agriculture.
Nick worked for several agricultural suppliers prior to setting up his own consulting company in the mid 1980s. Nick became a well respected consultant in the stone fruit industry. Nick was one of the first consultants to recognize the potential and importance of mating disruption for the control of oriental fruit moth and tomato pinworm.
Most of his stone fruit growers were early adopters of this new innovative technology and Nick made many trips to Mexico offering his help and expertise. In 1991, Nick joined Micro Flo Company, to assist in the commercialization of Pacific Biocontrol’s mating disruption products.
As a consultant to Micro Flo, Nick was instrumental in the successful market development of both codling moth and oriental fruit moth products. Being fluent in Spanish, he worked on behalf of Pacific Biocontrol to establish and support markets for both products in Mexico and Uruguay and was instrumental in helping growers in both countries understand and deploy mating disruption technologies.
In addition to being a consultant, Nick played a prominent role on the Board of the Association of Applied Insect Ecologist for 7 years and farmed 15 acres of nectarines and mandarins with his wife Pat. Nick and Pat first met at the University of California, Riverside and they eventually married in Corona, California, and moved to Fresno. Nick and Pat joined a bicycle club and enjoyed several treks around California.
Nick Macris was a kind, thoughtful and loving person. Nick was always supportive of others and ready to give advice and share his knowledge. He loved farming and he had a passion for pheromone-based pest management. In addition to Pat, Nick is survived by his sister Daphne in Culiacán, Mexico. Nick will be missed by his many friends and colleagues.
Nick, may you rest in peace. Thank you for being there for us! We will miss you.
